Adventure & Outdoors · Cali, Colombia
Most visitors come to Cali for the salsa. The adventurous ones discover something else entirely: a city surrounded by mountains, rivers, rainforests, and a lake that generates some of the best wind in South America.
Cali sits at a remarkable geographic crossroads. To the west, the Western Andes rise steeply toward the Pacific rainforest. To the north, the Valle del Cauca opens into valleys dotted with rivers and reservoirs. To the south, the Farallones cloud forest begins just 20 minutes from the city center. All of this means that within a few hours of Cali, you can kitesurf on a mountain lake, descend waterfalls by rope, hike to a 2,860-meter summit, or float through a Pacific jungle on a crystal-clear river.
This is your complete guide to adventure sports and outdoor activities near Cali — from beginner-friendly to genuinely challenging.

Lago Calima — Kitesurfing, Windsurfing & Water Sports
Lago Calima — officially the Calima El Darién reservoir — is one of the best-kept secrets in South American adventure sports. Located 86 km north of Cali in the municipality of Calima El Darién, at an altitude of 1,600 meters, the lake generates remarkably consistent Andean winds that make it one of the premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations in the country.
The winds here are strongest in the afternoon, typically picking up between 1 PM and 5 PM. The lake's size (roughly 22 km²) gives riders plenty of open water, and the mountain backdrop makes it one of the most scenic kitesurfing spots anywhere in Latin America.

Pico de Loro — Cali's Most Spectacular Hiking Summit
Pico de Loro ("Parrot's Peak") is the most iconic hiking destination near Cali — a 2,860-meter summit located inside the Parque Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali, accessible from the corregimiento of Pance. The trail starts at the Centro de Educación Ambiental El Topacio at 1,700 meters and climbs through cloud forest, river crossings, and dense jungle vegetation before breaking out to extraordinary panoramic views of the Valle del Cauca, the Farallones range, and on clear days, parts of the Pacific coast near Buenaventura.
This is not a beginner hike. AllTrails rates Pico de Loro as very difficult, with a 9.7 km round trip, steep and rocky terrain, and sections that require scrambling on exposed rock. The descent is considered as challenging as the ascent — the trail is exceptionally slippery when wet, which in a cloud forest is most of the time. A local guide is required (the trail passes through a protected area) and essential for navigation.
For those who complete it: the summit offers one of the most extraordinary views in all of Colombia. The Farallones park is home to over 540 bird species and more than 30 rivers that supply water to southwestern Colombia — the biodiversity along the trail alone is worth the effort.

San Cipriano — The Pacific Jungle Paradise
San Cipriano is one of the most extraordinary natural destinations accessible from Cali — and one of the most unique travel experiences in all of Colombia. Located in the Reserva Natural Protectora de los Ríos San Cipriano y Escalerete, at the edge of the Pacific rainforest, the reserve is accessible only by a legendary form of transport: the brujita.
A brujita is a homemade motorized platform built on the wheels of a bicycle, riding along an old railway track that cuts through the jungle. You sit on the platform as it speeds through tunnels of vegetation, with the Pacific forest closing in on both sides. It is simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating — and it's the only way to get there.
Once inside, San Cipriano reveals itself as a paradise of crystal-clear rivers, natural pools up to 10 meters deep, waterfalls, and jungle trails. The water is so clear you can see the bottom from above. You can swim, snorkel in the river, hike the surrounding rainforest, or simply float in the current.

The Adventurer's Cali
The salsa and the street food get most of the attention. But the Cali that adrenaline seekers fall in love with is the one you find outside the city — on the water at Lago Calima, breathing cloud forest air at 2,860 meters above Pance, floating through jungle in a brujita, or descending a waterfall in the Farallones.
The best trips to Cali combine both. Dance on Friday night. Hike on Saturday morning. Float in the river on Sunday afternoon. That's Cali done properly.
